While recovering from a wound sustained in the line of duty, cop Jack Davey has his kitchen renovated. Not a life-changing event -- until contractor Carmen O'Brien shows up to do the work instead of her brother! They're drawn to each other instantly, but Jack's facing a custody fight with his ex, and Carmen has some family issues too. And Jack's hero complex is a deal-breaker for Carmen, particularly once she learns she's pregnant. Lilian Darcy's A Mother in the Making (3) has two well-written characters, and there's a spark between them. But the subplots pull too much focus from the romance.
