Insanity runs rampant in Evanovich's second book in her Alexandra "Barney" Barnaby series. As in the first book,
the world of NASCAR becomes fodder for Evanovich's outrageous sense of humor and outlandish plot exploits. Overflowing with wackiness, this book, like all of Evanovich's titles, will truly tickle your funny bone.

Following a much-regretted one-night stand with a sales clerk, NASCAR driver Sam Hooker is still working on getting back on "friendly" terms with Barney, his race spotter and ace mechanic. After a race that Barney suspects was rigged, she gets a frantic call from a fellow spotter named Gobbles, who's locked in a transport hauler. When Barney and Hooker steal the rig to rescue Gobbles, they discover the murdered body of a prominent race-car owner stuffed into the truck.

Unfortunately, during the caper, Hooker's dog "Beans" is captured by the other side. Now they have to come up with a plan to rescue Beans and keep themselves alive. Has someone developed a cheating technology that will pass inspection undetected? If so, a number of people may be ready and willing to kill for it. (HARPERCOLLINS, Oct., 320 pp., $26.95)
