Denise Dory and Tom Phyfer are law enforcement officials who are often assigned unusual and high-profile cases. As Denise valiantly searches for clues to a string of murders, Tom is more interested in their relationship. He wonders if Denise "would be able to step away from the excitement of her work" and deep down understands that "even now, warm from bed and holding hands… her mind was not on him."

Cournti Wright does a wonderful job plotting the various twists and turns of this story. The relationship between Denise, Tom and his dog is an admirable one. Tom is a standout character; his desire to have Denise's undivided attention and love is heartbreaking. (Mar., 280 pp., $5.99)
