Kate Harmon left Cedar Dell, Texas, 17 years ago when she became an un-wed mother. Now she's returned for the summer to take care of her father, who was injured in a car accident, and perhaps can reconcile with other members of her family.

Max, now a widower and the father of Kate's 17-year-old son, Ryan, has also returned to Cedar Dell, along with his 5-year-old daughter. When Max discovers Kate and Ryan have returned, he works to earn Ryan's trust and win Kate's heart—again. This summer will not be a time for pleasurable relaxation…

MY BIG OLD TEXAS HEARTACHE polishes a well-known story by giving it a fresh twist. Dawson smoothly presents her characters from more than one point of view, adding a wonderful variety to her story. This is a very enjoyable book with a nice balance of humor and pathos. (Aug., 352 pp., $6.99)
