Although handled with warmth and humor, this book deals with the fallout from abuse. The experiences the heroine went through make her a gutsy survivor. Mysterious, supernatural danger enlivens this poignant tale of acceptance and developing love. It also contains the perfect setup for the next promising installment of the Midnight Bay series.

In the 11th century, Fiona Gregor was raped, lost a child and died — only to be transformed into a red-tailed hawk. Having followed her brothers into the 21st century, Fiona is restored to her human form by the powerful wizard Maximilian Oceanus, aka Mac. Her brothers fear that Fiona won’t adapt to modern life, so they finagle her move into an apartment owned by soldier turned lobsterman Trace Huntsman. Mac heralds danger of the mystical kind — someone or something is out to destroy this powerful wizard and Fiona and Trace are right in the line of fire! (POCKET STAR, Jul., 368 pp., $7.99)
