NANNY NEXT DOOR (4) by Michelle Celmer: After her former husband, Jeff, has her arrested on a trumped-up DUI charge after only one drink, Sydney Harris is out of her teaching job and at loose ends. On her way to pick up her final check, she backs into Deputy Daniel Valenzi’s car. Wary about a second run-in with the police, Sydney believes Dan will hassle her. Dan has his own problem, namely baby April, who was dropped off on his doorstep by social services because his name was on her birth certificate. Needing a job, Sydney agrees to act as his babysitter, and the confirmed bachelor suddenly sees the value of family life. Celmer’s characters have true-to-life emotions and motivations.
