Pierce pens a delightful and poignant romance that touches the emotions. Though some plot points are predictable, her wonderfully drawn characters are captivating and her story compelling.

At 14, Patience Farnlay fell madly in love with an actor and ran off with his troupe. But he betrayed her trust, leaving Patience to head up the players. She's finding it difficult to control the other actors, and after meeting Fowler Knowden, the Earl of Ramscar, she jumps at the chance to take a position as companion to his sister Meredith.

Ram is enchanted with Patience and knows she'll be good for his sister, who has been a recluse since she was scarred in a fire. It's a mutual attraction: Patience has heated dreams about Ram that become reality. But demons from the past put their love to the test. (St. Martin's, Dec., 324 pp., $6.99)
