Block brings back zany character Weetzie Bat 15 years after the beginning of her series.

Weetzie has turned 40 and is the owner of a funky L.A. clothing shop. Her relationship with her lover, secret agent man Max, has hit the doldrums, and Weetzie decides to leave him temporarily to escape to the pink hotel. The hotel is both beautiful and enchanted, with delightfully colorful characters such as an invisible maid and a lovely mermaid.

As Weetzie kisses various persons at the hotel, she gains insight into their lives and simultaneously receives jewels, which she makes into a necklace. For this unique and innovative read, the author incorporates fairy-tale characters (i.e., Pan, the 12 dancing girls and a spider lady) into a modern story. As Weetzie seeks to reawaken her relationship with Max, the magic of these fanciful characters heals the barren parts of her heart. Magical, mystical and downright fun, Block's latest is a true original. (Aug., 240 pp., $21.95)
