Burke’s wonderful Ellie Hatcher series continues with this tale of teenage tribulations and how these events affect her characters’ later lives, even to the next generation. The detectives and others find that things are not as they seem, assumptions are wrong and that so many people have failings of some sort. The surprises keep building until the end.
NYPD detective Ellie Hatcher and her partner investigate an apparent teen suicide. The girl’s wealthy family insists she was murdered and they pressure the police to pursue a criminal investigation. Ellie realizes that there is something off about the crime scene and discovers connections to threats on an abuse survivor’s blog. Soon Ellie is unraveling a web of connections between rich prep school students, a psychiatrist who may be overmedicating these students and some runaway street kids who are in the psychiatrist’s drug trial. It seems that everyone has something to hide. (HARPER, Jun., 352 pp., $24.99)
