This comic novel has a clever premise: two characters with totally different personalities must learn to be less like themselves and more like each other.

Bitchy Kirby is an executive who works for a sex toy company. Sweet Brianna is her new secretary. (The nature of their business provides a good share of the chuckles.) Kirby thinks getting ahead in life means knocking down anyone in her way. Brianna's just the opposite, letting others run her life. Kirby's arrogance causes problems at work and in her personal life, and Brianna's passivity backfires when her boyfriend demands she give up her dream of a singing career.

Parts of the story, such as the unprofessional bet between Kirby and her boss, stretch credulity. However, these sometimes exasperating, sometimes poignant characters provide their share of giggles and inspiring moments. (Jul., 320 pp., $13.00)
