This suspenseful, dark paranormal romance has a horrifying, vicious creature that must be defeated. Though there is a fairly happy ending, a number of threads are left dangling, and the background of what this creature is and where it came from is lacking. Plus, the twist that keeps good from completely triumphing over evil is disappointing.

The creature Cadamus rises every 25 years to feed and breed. As a girl, Gillian witnessed the creature leaving the room of her murdered mother, and her father was imprisoned for the crime.

Nick, the chosen Huntsman, is the only one who can destroy Cadamus. When Gillian seeks him out to help her prove the creature's existence, they work together to kill it. Yet Cadamus is not just an animal but a fairly intelligent being who has three drives -- to survive, procreate and kill the Huntsman. (Love Spell, Jul., 336 pp., $6.99)
