This is the first of Cain’s series books where serial killer Gretchen Lowell doesn’t play a major part. The tension and action are so dense she is not even missed. Every character is fully fleshed out and you’ll feel each loss entirely. It’s an emotional roller coaster, well worth the price of admission!

Det. Archie Sheridan and journalist Susan Ward have faced danger in the past, but nothing so deadly as the natural disaster heading their way. The Willamette River is flooding, the rain is showing no signs of stopping and people are turning up dead from mysterious — and definitely unnatural — causes. As they close in on the killer, they realize that a skeleton they found might be connected to a flood in 1948. Having these two events connected cause more problems than Archie wants to deal with but he knows he must save anyone he can. (MINOTAUR, Mar., 336 pp., $24.99)
