NIGHTFIRE

Author(s):

This full-length novel could have been stronger were it in a shorter format. There is a lot of repetition in the story and the elements of erotic romance and romantic suspense are never fully fleshed out. However, this tale is sure to please readers who enjoy stories of love at first sight. Some might question the choices that both Mike and Chloe make — he quickly gives up his player lifestyle and love is able to help her conquer a traumatizing childhood — but the author’s pacing addresses this issue. The story includes a six month break in the narrative, which helps solidify Chloe and Mike’s relationship and makes the romance more believable, giving the audience a satisfying read.

Ex-soldier Mike is in crisis. Since leaving the service, he hates what his life has become. Lately he spends most of his time hanging out at bars with countless, faceless women and living vicariously through his best friends, Harry and Sam, who have both started families of their own. Mike knows that it is time for a change and when he meets Harry’s long lost sister, Chloe, he is shocked and amazed by the intense feelings that overtake him. Mike Knows Chloe is the woman for him. However, obstacles quickly surface, first Mike’s sordid past gets in the way and then Chloe is threatened by some very unsavory characters. (AVON RED, Feb., 320 pp., $13.99)
