Book Review

NIGHTLIFE
by Rob Thurman

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

Cal knows he's a monster -- half-human, half-elf (or as his brother calls them, Grendels), but he doesn't know what his father and the rest of the Grendels want with him.

On the run with his brother Niko
for the past four years, they've settled
in New York City, which has magical denizens of its own. Unfortunately,
Cal's father has found him and will risk everything in order to get his claws on him to set their plan for world domination loose.

Cal's a sarcastic, sardonic narrator who pulls the reader into his world, both the good and the bad. Tightly plotted and fast-paced, this book is full of twists and turns that take the reader for one heck of a ride. While there are some interesting female characters, they're little more than window dressing in Cal's hyper-masculine and violent world. (Mar., 352 pp., $6.99)
