Image of The Ninth Day

While the lightning-fast pace will thrill readers and keep them turning pages to find out what happens to Emma, who is a genuinely appealing heroine, the stilted dialogue and minimally developed secondary characters may detract from the reading experience.

Biochemist Emma Caldridge accidentally stumbles onto marijuana plants that infect anyone who touches them with a fatal flesh-eating toxin. She’s taken prisoner by a Mexican drug cartel, which believes that the United States contaminated the plants and insist that Emma find a cure. But time is running out, because Emma herself has been infected. (HARPER, Oct., 416 pp., $9.99)
