NORTHERN ESCAPE (4) by Jennifer LaBrecque: Nick Hudson — the most popular travel writer at The New York Times — visits the quirky town of Good Riddance, Alaska, for the annual “Chrismoose” celebration, and falls head over heels for the mysterious, dark-haired restaurateur Augustina “Gus” Tippens. Gus is trying to keep a low profile, and getting involved with the hunky reporter threatens to blow the lid off her past. Their romance takes a while to build, but patient readers will be rewarded with an emotionally satisfying conclusion. A great holiday read that stubbornly avoids clichés and yet still manages capture the spirit of the season.
