In another of the Chicago Confidential series, Quint Crawford's special assignment is to protect Natalie Van Buren, daughter of the CEO of a worldwide oil conglomerate, from terrorists who intend to kidnap her. Quint's mission becomes complicated, and the bombings get dangerously close to home when her office goes up in flames. As suspects multiply, the story fragments a bit and becomes tedious. Not one of Cassie Miles's best stories, NOT ON HIS WATCH (1) has a predictable plot and wooden characters. Natalie is just too good and too strong to be believable, Quint seems to be a stereotyped drawl-and-brawl Texan, and the romance stems more from the writer's pen than the characters.
