Now that the main storyline of the Company series has been completed, Baker sets her sights on exploring the many nooks and crannies of the massive and complicated world of the Company. This one tackles the early life of Edward Bell-Fairfax, idealist and future lover of the botanist Mendoza. Fans of Baker's earlier works will enjoy this rather slight volume, while newer readers will likely wonder what all the fuss is about.

This is the story of a young man named Edward Bell-Fairfax, possessed of great gifts and recruited into a secret society with the knowledge of many fabulous contraptions and technology. An idealist, Edward grows into adulthood as the son of parents who don't want him and the student of a headmaster who has his own agenda.

After a disastrous stint in the British Navy, Edward joins a secret society that receives a mysterious message each year from someone in the future, and after his training is completed, he sets out with three fellow members in an attempt to stave off the worst of the Crimean War.
