Image of Nowhere, Carolina: A Novel (Southern Discomfort)

Aside from a few references and characters that carry over from the first book in the Southern Discomfort series, this can be read as a stand-alone. While the reader may be irritated with the pig-headedness of the main character, Leigh has created relatable cast, a fast-moving plot and an inspirational message in this entertaining, witty book.

Maggie got pregnant as a teenager, with three possible fathers for her baby. Thirteen years later, she's a strong Christian living in her hometown with her daughter, Devyn. She's happy and content -- until her ex-boyfriend, Reece Thorpe, moves back to town. Maggie sneaks around stealing DNA from all three candidates to figure out paternity before they do. The answer could bring her closure, but it might just ruin her chances at true love. (MULTNOMAH, May, 384 pp., $13.99)
