Kinsey Millhone is taken by surprise when she gets a call from a ?scavenger? who wants to sell her a box of her possessions he found when he bought the contents of an abandoned storage shed. Against her better judgement, she buys it.

The storage shed was rented by her first husband, Mickey Magruder, and the box seems to be full of inconsequential things that she left behind when they divorced. However, then she finds an unopened letter addressed to her. The letter forces Kinsey to re-examine her beliefs about her ex-husband and herself. She realizes she may have done Mickey a great injustice, and tries to find him, but to her shock, she learns that he?s been shot by persons unknown and is comatose.

Determined to discover the truth about her ex-husband and her own past, Kinsey begins investigating. She learns that her own basic cynicism may have triggered the incidents that led to Mickey?s shooting, and that her own life is in the gravest danger.

A Top Pick in hardcover, ?O? IS FOR OUTLAW is a triumph, a magnificent piece of storytelling. The plot is extremely strong with many twists and turns. For the first time, Grafton reveals quite a bit about Kinsey?s past, and fans will be enthralled. (Jan., 368 pp., $7.99—Hardcover published November 1999)
