Book Review

ONE MOMENT, ONE MORNING
by Sarah Rayner

Genre: Mainstream, General Mainstream Fiction

RT Rating

Rayner’s quietly poignant novel has moments of greatness, but the characters often come across as caricatures rather than real people. The plot moves rather slowly through one week, and then abruptly jumps ahead to a time in the future where everything is more positive. The change is jarring and doesn’t achieve its intended purpose of providing a neat, happy ending.

Three unrelated women are traveling on the 7:44 train to London when Karen’s husband suffers a fatal heart attack. Lou observes the event, and ends up sharing a cab with Anna, who knows Karen and her husband but didn’t realize they were on the train. The three women become connected by the tragedy, and learn a great deal about themselves over the course of the coming week. (ST MARTIN'S GRIFFIN, Feb., 416 pp., $9.99)
