An engaging, fast-paced mystery. While Pia is very relatable, some of the other characters could have been more developed. At times the relationship between Pia and Eio seems unrealistic, but it is touching and plot propelling. With a little suspended disbelief, readers will enjoy discovering Pia’s origin.
Created by scientists, Pia lives a life ruled by logic. Her goal is to become a member of a scientific team so that she can continue creating immortal beings. Her plans get turned upside down as she draws closer to the crux of immortality. On her birthday, she sneaks out and meets Eio, a boy from the jungle. Their interaction prompts Pia to wonder if immortality is as perfect as she was led to believe. (RAZORBILL, Sep., 372 pp., $17.99, ISBN: 9781595145956, HC, 12 & Up)
