Aguirre’s follow-up to Enclave is dark and wonderfully written. Creating a character like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and trapping her in a world like Little House on the Prairie, Aguirre catches the reader’s imagination. From the first page you’re transported to a world with monsters outside and Old World society thriving within.

Deuce has relocated to the topside world of Salvation. In the under enclave she was considered an adult, but in Salvation she is viewed as a child, expected to do as adults tell her. Relegated to sewing, cooking and school, the huntress in Deuce is begging to be released. Feelings for her former partner, Fade, overwhelm her. Then, the Freak population outside starts to prepare for war, and it will take a girl like Deuce to stop it. (FEIWEL & FRIENDS, Sep., 336 pp., $17.99, ISBN: 9780312650094, HC, 12 & Up)
