Even though Snyder creates a complex and interesting concept, this sequel is a step down from the previous novel. Although it picks up suspense toward the end, there’s little character development and a lukewarm plot. Fans should pick this up to see what happens, but the story uses too many words to get its point across.

After Trella led a major rebellion that defeated the Uppers who ruled their world, and discovered the Outside world, she thought she’d be free to lay low again with trusted Upper, Riley. But she’s not off the hook. Systems are failing, and those in power are losing control. Trella must unite with friends and enemies to stop whatever is Outside trying to get In.
