American Title III contestant Fennell takes readers on a delightful underwater adventure in her debut. A cross between Splash and The Little Mermaid, this tale is full of good-natured humor and fun. While more time could have been spent developing the characters and their submerged world, this is a strong first effort by a promising new talent.

Marina owner Erica Peck has been terrified of the water ever since an incident when she was a child. When her life is endangered by her ex-fiance, she learns that more than fish live in the sea.

Reel Tritone, the prodigal son of the ruler of the Mer people, comes to her rescue and introduces her to life under the sea. The two set off on a quest to protect a valuable treasure and battle a few sea monsters along the way. (SOURCEBOOKS, Jun., 343 pp., $6.99)
