Kinsey Millhone's back with a new case and it's a humdinger. Dr. Dowan Purcell has vanished and his ex-wife Fiona wants Kinsey to investigate, even though the Purcells have been divorced for years and Dow's now married to Crystal, a man-crazy former stripper. Still, a job's a job and Kinsey's happy for it, especially since she needs the money for a new office space.

Kinsey interviews all and sundry who knew the good doctor and learns that the doc was a drinker, had taken off before, and may be involved with Medicare fraud.

Still, all work and no play makes for a dull detective and in her search for new digs, she meets a younger man who stirs up her emotions. Getting involved with Tommy Hevener is exciting but it just may stop Kinsey—in more ways than one—from solving her case.

A strong storyline, diverse characters, and fascinating subplots will send P IS FOR PERIL to the top of the bestseller list. Kinsey is as witty and refreshing as always, and Ms. Grafton is in fine style here. (Jun., 384 pp., $7.99) Hardcover published June 2001.
