Image of Pale Demon (The Hollows, Book 9)

The ninth book in Harrison’s Hollows series follows a similar pattern to the last few volumes, namely that awful things happen to Rachel Morgan and she keeps surviving despite not thinking anything through to its logical conclusion, leading her to make ill-considered and impulsive decisions. The end of this book is a game-changer, though, and Rachel is going to have to make some hard decisions in the future.

What happens when a witch, a vampire, an elf and a pixie take a road trip? Lots of crazy things, is what. Rachel Morgan has three days to make it to the witches convention in San Francisco, but she’s on the no-fly list. Trent Kalamack has his own reasons for needing to get to the West Coast by land, and it just seems natural that Ivy and Jenks would tag along. While en route to California, a day-walking demon is released from his prison and goes on a soul-eating binge, with an eye toward eventually eating Rachel’s essence. Rachel faces him down, but fully embracing her demonic nature may not be enough. (HARPER VOYAGER, Mar., 448 pp., $26.99)
