Photographer Alexandra Haywood suffers a devastating blow when her father, Charles Haywood, apparently commits suicide at his horse farm in Kentucky. Alexandra is forced to sell the farm and the horses.

When Alexandra announces to Joe Welch, the farm manager, that she is selling everything, Joe refuses to go quietly.

To make matters worse, her 15-year-old half sister, Neely, was kicked out of boarding school and is now back home, cavorting with Joes 16-year-old-son, Eli. But someone is watching the pair and waiting for their chance to strike.

Along with exceptional heroes and heroines, Ms. Robards has delivered wonderfully drawn secondary characters and family members. This makes her tales of romantic suspense feel all the more satisfying. (Dec., 352 pp., $7.99) Hardcover published November 2000.
