When artist Rochelle Baxter is killed in Cochise County, Arizona, Sheriff Joanna Brady investigates and learns that Baxter was in the witness protection program and her real name was Latisha Wall. This brings outsider J.P. Beaumont in to investigate if the murder was linked to her past.

Joanna, always a bit hot tempered and protective of her turf, gets her feathers ruffled. This does not bother the ever-pragmatic Beau, who knows that getting the job done is what counts. However, Joanna is soon able to put aside her resentment to work with him and uncover a killer.

Using a convincing scenario, J.A. Jance brings her two series detectives together for the first time in PARTNER IN CRIME. Although the plotting seems less sharp than usual, Beau and Joanna make a pleasing team and this is great way for readers to try both series. (Aug., 384 pp., $24.95)
