Nicholas, Lord Huntington, is granted leave from battle after an injury leaves him badly wounded. Traveling weakens him, and he awakens to Miss Charlotte Kittridge, the doctor's daughter, who insists on caring for his leg. Though she is long on the shelf, Charlotte finds Huntington a compelling man. But he's hiding a secret that keeps Charlotte from getting too close.

Through Nash's wonderful prose, it's easy to see how these two fall in love, despite interference from Charlotte's sister. The hero's secret is handled marvelously and sensitively. (Aug., 224 pp., $4.99)
