Beverly Barton's Penny Sue Got Lucky (4) is an endearing mystery filled with eccentric characters. Penny Sue Paine inherits her aunt's dog Lucky (who, in turn, is heir to her $23 million estate), and immediately accidents start happening. Other family heirs are disgruntled about the will, and Lucky's life is in danger. To protect him and discover who's trying to kill the dog, Penny Sue hires a private detective as a bodyguard for Lucky. Vic Noble is more than reluctant to play bodyguard to a dog and plans to get out of it as soon as possible. But Vic soon finds himself drawn into the crazy lives of Penny, Lucky, and the rest of the Paine family. Some great humor and an unpredictable mystery make this one of Barton's best.
