The newest installment of Novak's Last Stand series is disturbing and occasionally macabre, with a sociopathic villain who's as fascinating as she is repulsive. Haunting and thought-provoking.

Hurting over the death of his best friend in Iraq, Air Force Captain Luke Trussell loses himself in alcohol --and in the arms of Sergeant Kalyna Harter. As far as Luke's concerned, it's
a one-night stand he'd rather forget.

But the next morning, he's awakened
by base security officers and told he's been accused of rape and assault --
by Kalyna. The accusation is just the beginning of Luke's ordeal.
Kalyna contacts victims' rights advocate Ava Bixby for help finding evidence to convict Luke. Ava's investigation doesn't go as expected -- it turns out that Luke is squeaky clean, while Kalyna is deeply troubled. Ava winds up working with Luke to clear his name instead ... unknowingly placing herself in a killer's crosshairs. (MIRA, Sep., 432 pp., $7.99)
