RT Rating

As always, Novak's plotting is flawless, and her characterizations are rich and multilayered. What sets this story apart from the rest is the intensity of the romance between the two wounded protagonists -- it simply sizzles. A keeper.

A year ago, investment banker Sebastian Costas' life changed forever when his former wife and son were murdered by her second husband, Malcolm Turner. An ex-cop, Turner convinced everyone else that he committed suicide after taking their lives -- but Sebastian knows better.
Turner's trail leads him to victims' advocate Jane Burke at the Last Stand. Jane's working the case of two missing teenagers, and it appears they've been abducted by Turner. Joining forces with Sebastian to bring the ex-cop to justice changes Jane's life and puts her in harm's way when Turner connects her
to Sebastian. But Jane survived a marriage to a serial killer, and the aftermath of his capture -- which Turner isn't aware of. (MIRA, Oct., 448 pp., $7.99)
