Having her ex-boyfriend, photojournalist Harry Bensen, fall at her feet— literally—is the last thing ex-model Althea Almott expects upon returning to Manhattan. Divorced, vulnerable and keen to resume modeling, Althea is drawn to Harry while she nurses him, but the issues that broke them up years ago—her career and their different races (she's black and he's white)—obviously still exist. Have they changed enough to overcome them? Barbara Gale's Picking Up the Pieces (4) reads like mainstream fiction, balancing grit with glitz, and the interracial relationship's pitfalls are handled frankly. Althea's fascinating, but Harry could have been developed a bit more.
