While Hayes has created an intriguing alternate reality, richly drawn and fully realized in her latest Shadowfae Chronicle, the main problem with this book is that there too many different storylines, each told from multiple perspectives — sometimes first person, sometimes third. So, not only does the main plot get lost in the mix, but the perspective shifts also become completely disorienting, making it nearly impossible to deeply invest in any one particular character.

Mina, a tough blue-haired banshee with a fatal song, works for Joey, a snakeshifter mob boss embroiled in a turf war with a rival gang. They’re both attracted to one another, but fear the consequences of entering into a romantic relationship. Then Mina finds out that Joey may have been involved in her mother’s murder, which she has long sworn to avenge. (ST. MARTIN’S, Oct., 352 pp., $7.99)
