Book Review

THE POISON THRONE
by Celine Kiernan

Genre: Fantasy, General Fantasy

RT Rating

Kiernan will stun you with her debut novel, as her extraordinarily drawn characters invite themselves into your head for a nice visit. With deep societal intrigue and political machinations at the fore, her investment in the "what if" of medieval Europe is sure to captivate. You won't put this book down before it is through with you. It narrowly misses a higher rating because of an ending that is a too-obvious slide into a sequel.

Wynter is a rare person in her world -- a young girl raised among princes who has been given the keys to her own independence. A full apprentice to her father's mastery in carpentry, Wynter has a place in society most women cannot hope to hold.

At least until the day it all begins to unravel. After years spent in the north at the behest of the King, Wynter and her father return home to find their kingdom, and their king, turned brutal and dangerous. Her best friend, the bastard prince Ravi, is at odds with the king for honorable reasons. Wynter and her father must find their place in this new and dangerous game. (ORBIT, Apr., 512 pp., $14.99)
