MacLean’s Royal Trilogy continues with Princess Rose’s star-crossed love story. Though slow in pace and full of introspection, the lush prose and beauty of the romance sweeps readers into the Regency whirl, the battlefield at Waterloo and the palaces of Europe so well, they will be fascinated.

Rose has loved Leo Hunt, Marquess of Cavanaugh, for years — not knowing he is a secret Royalist with a claim to the throne. Leo is madly in love with Rose as well, but Rose is engaged to the Austrian prince for a political marriage that will help keep her father and brother on the throne. Even as Rose weds her prince, and Leo fights against Napoleon, their forbidden passion lies dormant — awaiting the day they can be together. (ST. MARTIN’S, Nov., 400 pp., $ 7.99)
