A PROMISE FOR THE BABY (4) by Jennifer Lohmann: After a drunken night in Vegas and a quickie impulse wedding, Karl Milek is shocked when the wife he’s divorcing shows up on his Chicago doorstep pregnant, broke and toting a parrot. Having been fired from her Las Vegas casino job as a dealer because of her father’s scheming, and broke because he took her life savings, Vivian has no one to turn to except for Karl. Though he’s shocked at first, Karl quickly warms up to the idea of fatherhood. But when he finds out why Vivian got fired, he’s not sure his lawyerly mind will ever trust her again. Quirky secondary characters and snappy dialogue make Lohmann’s A Promise for the Baby a strong story. Karl’s funny and individualistic family, as well as Vivian’s character of a father, add nice color to the novel.
