Gwyneth Bolton masterfully handles some serious social issues in Protect and Serve (3) without allowing them to overpower the romance. The hero and heroine, however, seem to be forced apart to move the story along. Successful L.A. business owner Penny Keys is home to bury her grandmother, the woman who reared her when her drug-addicted mother could not. She's forced to face her past in the form of high school sweetheart Jason Hightower, who has become a police officer. Years after losing Penny to his best friend, Terrill, Jason's still hurting. One evil, meddling aunt, a recovering drug-addict mother who's attacked, a past that was one big lie and serious trust issues are the obstacles this couple must navigate to be together.
