When it comes to being angry and isolated, werewolf Luna Wilder is a bona fide expert. Kittredge returns readers to gritty Nocturne City, where power and old grudges can hold terrible sway. The pacing is rapid and the peril eminent as this prickly and self-destructive heroine narrates her tale. This is a series and an author that are definitely going places!

On her first day back on the job, homicide detective Luna Wilder is stuck with both a new partner and what looks like a simple blood witch junkie overdose. Thanks to her dogged determination, Luna ends up ticking off a variety of characters with the ability to at the very least make her life miserable. This includes pack elders who have forbidden her former lover Dmitri Sandovsky from seeing her. When a high-powered witch is murdered, Luna suddenly realizes that she has stepped into the middle of magical gang war. The stakes in this power struggle may be Nocturne City itself, and Luna may just learn a surprising fact about herself! (ST. MARTIN'S, Sep., 352 pp., $6.99)
