Essex uses the edict “Never say never to passion” to its best advantage as a headstrong heroine and dashing hero collide in a sensual romance laced with intrigue. The fast pace and gothic overtones enhance the love story, but Essex’s forte is creating likable, strong characters readers will love.

Lizzie Paxton craves the freedom accorded a widow, but she needs a husband first. When Captain James Marlowe, her childhood friend, overhears her comments, he proposes a marriage in name only. Not only will Lizzie get what she wants, but he will have the perfect cover for a government mission that includes faking his own death. But James can’t resist playing a game of seduction with his bride, and one taste of passion has Lizzie longing for more. Then James departs and within days of learning of his death, Lizzie is accused of his murder. James must choose between his love for Lizzie and his loyalty to England, drawing her into his dangerous pursuit of a band of smugglers. (BRAVA, Dec., 320 pp., $14.00)
