King’s ability to draw readers into dark and intriguing stories is at its height in this tale that is as complex and colorful as the threads of a tapestry. Her love of research is obvious in the historical details as is her passion for telling an evocative story.

Saxon Princess Margaret and her brother Edgar are shipwrecked and seek refuge with Malcolm Canmore, the warrior-king. Malcolm agrees to help Edgar if Margaret will become his wife.

A reluctant queen in a barbaric country, a good wife and mother, Margaret helps Malcolm become a sophisticated ruler. Then Eva, a bard, is brought to court as hostage to Lady Macbeth’s loyalty. Margaret fears trouble, but the very different women forge a strong friendship. When it is discovered that Eva is Lady Macbeth’s spy, Eva is imprisoned and awaits her sentence at Margaret’s hand.
