Although this tale starts off slowly, Elbury soon ratchets up the emotional intensity with an assassination plot, an attempted rape and a duel. However, the story also includes some sweet moments, such as when Marcus shows Sophie his favorite property. Readers will be impressed by the dauntless Sophie, but may be slower to warm up to Marcus who spends much of his time trying to convince her to join the demimonde. However, by the tale's end this is one more likable couple whose love will warm readers' hearts.

Miss Sophie Flint and the young woman she governs meet Marcus Wolfe, Viscount Helstone, while they are all trapped in an inn during a snowstorm. Although Sophie and the viscount are immediately attracted to each other, she refuses his carte blanche several times. Once they return to town, the lord does not give up his pursuit of Sophie, even going so far to tell her employer that they are distant cousins, so that he may spend time with her attempting a seduction. It is not until Sophie is dismissed that Marcus realizes his true feelings for Sophie run much more deeply, but will he be able to convince his family — and Sophie — that she is the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with?
