Bridges delivers an enjoyable installment in her Mail-Order Weddings series as she wrangles romance, deception and attempted murder. With all these pieces come several unanswered questions that may leave readers hoping for a conclusion in forthcoming books. All in all, this is an entertaining tale.

After surviving the Chicago Fire, Cassandra decided to become a mail-order bride, but her designated groom is no stranger. Before the city burned and left her life in the ashes, Cassandra and Jack McColton were close friends. When things ended badly, Cassandra vowed never to see him again — until she agrees to become his wife. Wracked with guilt over abandoning her, Jack offers Cassandra the life of a rancher’s wife. But, even as a wealthy, respected veterinarian, Jack can’t protect Cassandra from the evil designs of another. The newlyweds must sort through their past and the building heat of desire before they lose their second chance at love. (HARLEQUIN, Jan., 288 pp., $6.50)
