Reporter Juliet Madsen meets widowed rancher Matt Sanchez by chance when she attends his cousin's wedding. In addition to a piece about the wedding, she's also writing an article about a family scandal, which upsets Matt, but Juliet can't afford to back off. Her editor's pressuring her, and she needs the job. Getting past Matt's mistrust isn't easy, even after they're lovers -- and what will happen when the truth is revealed? Stella Bagwell's The Rancher's Request (2) has several problems. Matt and Juliet are one-dimensional, and the seemingly explosive conflict fizzles out in a simplistic resolution. Its one asset is the supporting characters.
