This is a fast-moving, rather violent story with some interesting elements. The hero and heroine's relationship develops quickly, but believably. A basically all-powerful villain tends to be more irritating than scary and the ending feels rushed and rather anti-climactic. The sex is quite explicit and includes anal.

Sophie is a paranormal researcher who doesn't believe in the paranormal. But as she investigates why her best friend Dao is so ill, she discovers that vampires are real and that Dao is married to one. The race is on to save him. Assisting her is college professor and vampire Ric Vogel, to whom she's strongly attracted. Against them is an ancient one who wants Sophie for himself. Will Sophie be able to save Dao without having to sacrifice her own humanity? (Kensington, Sep., 320 pp., $12.95)
