Littlefield excels at building a cracking adventure story around a strong emotional core. Cass’ ties to her daughter and to the two men in her life engage the reader’s sympathies while providing believable motivation for her choices and actions. Like the series launch title, Aftertime, Rebirth is a book about what it means to love and be human disguised as a story about a zombie-riddled dystopia.
Cass Dollar has her daughter back and a home at the survivalist camp the Box with Smoke, her enigmatic partner. But when Smoke leaves on a mission of revenge, Cass and Ruthie set off with the camp’s leader, Dor, to help him rescue his daughter from the evil, autocratic Rebuilders. (LUNA, Aug., 384 pp., $14.95)
