This is such a masterful retelling of a biblical tale that one is fully immersed in before realizing that it is a story that has been lived out many times before. Griggs’ novel is entertaining, thought provoking and uplifting.
Brianna Bathsheba Wright is married to her high school sweetheart, Unzell Waters, and is living an dissatisfied life as a newlywed. Unzell’s dreams of playing in the NFL are thwarted by an injury and he spends a great deal of time away from home working on the stage crew for gospel megastar King d.Avid. Brianna tries to keep herself busy by taking classes, spending time with her best friend Alana and waiting for Unzell to “visit” home. When Alana house-sits a beach home, Brianna visits and avails herself of the “redeeming waters.” Unbeknownst to her she is being observed by someone looking down from the rooftop of his home. As the story unfolds and reaches its conclusion, all of the characters will deal with the aftermath and heartache of bad decisions. (DAFINA, Aug., 320 pp., $15.00)
