Alexander again delivers a most amazing story. The characters are more than words on the page; they become real people. Though there are French words sprinkled throughout the story, they enhance the emotions rather than distract the reader.

Veronique Girard promised her dying mother she would travel to Colorado territory to try to find her father. She was a young child when he left Paris, and her mother always claimed he would send for them once he was settled, but he never did.

Colorado is nothing like Veronique's beloved Paris. But she learns to adapt to her new surroundings and hires Jack Brennan to drive her around to the mining towns in search of her father.

Jack has finally let go of his grief after the death of his wife and child. He has been hauling supplies to the mining towns, but having a female on board was never part of the plan. Neither is keeping this woman out of harm's way. Will Veronique learn that there are reasons things happened the way they did? Can Jack learn to love again without fear?
