THE RENEGADE (3) by Rhonda Nelson: Security expert Tanner Crawford must escort museum curator Mia Hawthorne and a South American fertility god statue safely from D.C. to Dallas. Mia and Tanner dated in college, and their road trip turns into a stroll down memory lane, which is not flattering to Tanner, considering that he broke Mia’s heart. When they’re not running from would-be statue thieves, Mia is dodging Tanner’s advances. While the setup is compelling, Tanner’s name-calling and lewd jokes come across as crass. It’s unclear why Mia, who is an otherwise strong, intelligent heroine, would want to go another round with him.
